I have a grip on Visio for the most part but there is one ‘bug’ that is driving me crazy and I was wondering if anyone in here might be able to shed some light on my issue.

Here is the problem: My standard Visio template has a page size of Arch D (24×36). At the time this template was created, that was the largest size that my plotter could output. When I go to print my drawings out, Visio makes the default printer paper size Monarch Envelope.

If I go to File -> Page Setup -> Print Setup, The printer paper has nothing selected and when I click the drop down, Arch D is not listed nor is 24×36. If I select custom and then go to setup, there is no way to specify 24×36 and it is also not listed.

If I go to File -> Page Setup -> Page size, the radio button for Pre-defined size is selected and 36in. x 24in. is selected. If I choose “same as printer size”, since nothing was selected on the earlier page, then it defaults to monarch envelopes.

Why does this bug me? Every time I go to print a set of drawings, I have to go to each page individually and change the page size from print preview in order to print properly and on drawings that have many pages this can be pretty time consuming.

1.) Is there anyway to add paper sizes to the printer paper drop down?
2.) Is there a way to specify a default printer that is just for Visio? I suspect that because my laserjet is my default printer that may be screwing things up but I cannot set my plotter as a default printer, there are too many ways that would muck things up. Like printing an E size letter.

    Any help would be appreciated.

I don’t know if this will help, but we never print to our printer or plotter from Visio. We turn everything into a PDF and then print from there.

I hope that helps – sorry if it doesn’t.

Unfortunately it doesn’t :( printing to PDF has the exact same issues.

    Crap!

But if you print to PDF, won’t that at least save you from having to format EACH PAGE? Wouldn’t you just have to reformat the PDF document as a whole?

Did you ever solve this? I’m having the same issue. Any help would be great. If you haven’t solved it let me know and I’ll post here if I figure it out.

Nevermind I figured it out. Thanks.
The only solution is to make your plotter the default printer. That’s the only way the sizes show up. Sorry for the bad news.

I had some similar issues with a template I created. I found that modifying the template per page as you have done then resaving the entire template with those changes as a new template solved a lot of the having to go back and change all the pages again and again. Not sure if it will save your default paper size/type away from monarch envelopes but it might.

Sorry if this doesn’t help your issue.
