It would be absolutely awesome if there were a way to create component ID “zones”. This way creating clones of rooms and making minor changes would not create a completely unique, seemingly unrelated sequence of component IDs. (Assuming a “clone” meant also copying the component ID)

My installers feel like if there were a consistency of component IDs and wire labels they wouldn’t have to spend so much time examining and interpreting drawings.

To explain further, say I have a room that has a switcher in it “SW-001”, I have another similar room that adds some component. I currently have 2 options: create another drawing that includes the changes but changes all component IDs (SW-001 becomes SW-049) or add some callouts detailing the changes. Both options have their issues: option 1 means more work for the designer (most of it a duplication of labor), option 2 means lots of questions to leads/PMs while installers try to wrap their head around callouts/special cases and the inevitable re-work that comes with someone misunderstands the call-outs.

I understand I could add locations/phases/systems to the component ID but that is not ideal. I don’t need or want that info in the component ID.

If it is not possible to create component ID zones then perhaps a way to add a hidden field to component ID that will not print would be just as good.
